The Mission Oaks Gardens was incorporated in Ohio in 2016. It is a non-profit organization, and has IRS 501 (C) 3 tax exempt status. Its mission is preserving green space in Appalachia Ohio and providing educational information and experiences in horticulture. The Gardens were transferred to the Muskingum Valley Park District in 2011 by the foundation through the ENRAC Clean Ohio Fund. The organization manages the gardens with the assistance of staff and garden volunteers. Garden volunteers provide maintenance, education and guided tours of the gardens.

Mission Oaks Volunteer Program
Mission Oaks offers membership in a rewarding stewardship program for beginning and seasoned gardeners. This is an opportunity to work along experienced horticulturalists and learn from both staff and other knowledgeable volunteers. Our volunteer members are an integral part of supporting and promoting the gardens and may choose to participate in the areas in which they have the most interest. This includes working as a team with staff in creating new gardens, tending to and improving upon already established gardens, guiding tours, creating and helping run programs and events, etc.
Garden volunteers are asked to do 30 hours per year towards the activities or programs of their choosing. These hours may include any time spent helping out in the gardens, setting up and assisting at events, acting as a tour guide or docent in the gardens, etc.
Becoming a volunteer member of Mission Oaks Gardens comes with the following benefits:
- Making lots of new gardening friends!
- VIP early registration to all events and workshops
- Special programs designed for volunteer members only
- Field trips to notable gardens and specialty nurseries
- Access to hard to find plants and our occasional exclusive plant sales
- Doing something wonderful for your community
